Malaysia - Coins

Malaysia produced its own coinage from 1967, some years after the formation of Malaysia. In the meantime the malaya and British Borneo currency continued to be used.

The Malaysian Ringgit (Dollar) is worth one hundred Sen (cents).

Malaysian coinage has changed very little over the years, and still has a lot in common with the Straits Settlements coinage of the 19th century. Some changes have taken place, most notably the introduction of the One Ringgit coin.

Malaysia has had only two series of coins. The 1967 series, depicting the Malaysian houses of Parliament, followed the same format as the preceding Malay and British Borneo series, with 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen coins. In 1971 a 1 Ringgit coin was added. All these coins are still legal tender today. The 1989 series carried on exactly the same format (except for the 1 Ringgit coin), with a variety of cultural items (spinning tops, drums, etc) depicted.

I don't have a comprehensive set of images yet - still working on this. Meanwhile these images give a flavour of the coinage. Click on any image to see a full size scan.
