Malaysia produced its first banknotes in 1967, some four years after the country was created. In the meantime the Malaya and British Borneo notes continued to be used.
There have been three complete series of notes, issued in 1967, 1982 and 1996. A new 50 Ringgit note was issued to commemorate the hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 1998, and a further new 5o Ringgit note was issued in 2007.
